Answer

MSI USB-C Docking Station Gen 2 expands display, USB device, network, and audio connectivity through a single USB Type-C connection. It can also provide up to 100W of power to laptops that support USB Power Delivery.

When used with a compatible MSI laptop, it also supports the following three advanced features:

  1. One Click Away

  2. Wake-on-LAN remote wake-up

  3. MAC Address Pass Through

Actual feature support may vary depending on the laptop model, USB Type-C port capabilities, BIOS version, and network driver. Refer to the information below for details.

This article applies to all MSI laptops used with MSI USB-C Docking Station Gen 2.

What are the basic requirements?

Before using MSI USB-C Docking Station Gen 2, make sure the following requirements are met:

  1. The USB Type-C port on the laptop supports DisplayPort video output.

  2. To charge the laptop through the Dock, the USB Type-C port must support Power Delivery input.

  3. Update the laptop BIOS to the latest version available on the MSI website.

  4. Use the power adapter included with the Dock and a compatible USB Type-C cable.

MSI USB-C Docking Station Gen 2 supports up to three external displays. However, the actual number of displays, resolutions, and refresh rates supported depend on the video output capabilities of the laptop's USB Type-C port.

One Click Away

Press and hold the power button on MSI USB-C Docking Station Gen 2 to wake the laptop. When the laptop is running, the power button can also be used to put the system into Modern Standby or shut it down.

Requirements:

  • A compatible MSI laptop equipped with an 11th Gen Intel processor or a newer platform

  • The laptop BIOS has been updated to the latest version available on the MSI website

  • The laptop's USB Type-C port supports Power Delivery. For more information, refer to [Product Information] USB Type-C

PXE Remote Wake-Up (WoL)

Wake-on-LAN (WoL) allows a laptop connected to a power source to be remotely awakened from sleep or a shutdown state.

Note: Some laptops that support Modern Standby do not support PXE remote wake-up.

Requirements:

  • A compatible MSI laptop equipped with an 11th Gen Intel processor or a newer platform

  • The BIOS has been updated to the latest version available on the MSI website

  • The latest LAN driver provided on the MSI website has been installed

MAC Address Pass Through

MAC Address Pass Through uses the system-unique MAC address stored in the system BIOS. Each time the laptop connects to a network through the Dock, this address overrides the Dock's MAC address to meet business and IT management requirements.

Requirements:

  • A compatible MSI laptop equipped with an 11th Gen Intel processor or a newer platform

  • The BIOS has been updated to the latest version available on the MSI website

  • The related MAC Address Pass Through feature is available and enabled in the BIOS

  • The latest LAN driver provided on the MSI website has been installed

FAQ

Q: Do all MSI laptops equipped with USB Type-C support these three features?

A: Not necessarily. USB Type-C only defines the connector type. Supported data transfer, DisplayPort, Power Delivery, and advanced management features may vary by model.

For detailed compatibility information and a list of supported models, refer to the MSI USB-C Docking Station Gen 2 Support Guide.

Q: Why is the resolution or refresh rate of the external display lower than expected?

A: The display output capabilities of the Dock are affected by the laptop's USB Type-C port, available DisplayPort bandwidth, the number of connected external displays, the cable, and the display specifications. MSI USB-C Docking Station Gen 2 supports up to three displays. When multiple displays are connected at the same time, the available bandwidth is shared between the outputs, which may reduce the maximum supported resolution and refresh rate.
