Performance Advantage of MSI Laptops with 13th Gen CPU and RTX 40 GPU

Laptops

New Generation Graphics - RTX 40 series performance

With full embargo lift now passed, the long-awaited new GPU has come. The all-new 40 series consist of RTX 4090/4080/4070/4060/4050. The new Ada Lovelace architecture brings the next-gen Ray Tracing and DLSS3 AI acceleration which takes the in-game performance to another level. Now it’s time to take a closer look at how they actually run.

Looking at extreme flagships with RTX 4090 comparing to former flagship RTX 3080 Ti, the new king can achieve 65% higher in synthetic benchmarks and up to 200% higher in in-game fps. This is especially the case for performance flagships such as Titan GT77 HX and Raider GE78 HX, delivering utmost potential of the new generation with highest possible power and cooling.

A closer look will further reveal that a RTX 4070 can overthrow the last-gen king, while performing up to 40% higher when comparing to the similar-class-ed RTX 3070 Ti.

One of the most impressive aspects is the power efficiency. This especially benefits the thin-&-lights such as the Stealth series that were more limited in power. They can now be even more compact but also more powerful.

And who could’ve thought: even the most entry Cyborg series with RTX 4050 will be able to run AAA titles at their max!

Push the mobile boundary further - CPU performance

Continued with the Hybrid Architecture design with Performance-core and Efficient-core, the 13th gen processor pushes the limit of the CPU performance further.

To achieve that, the flagship 13th gen Intel HX series processor has doubled the E-core numbers from 8 cores to 16 cores, which created a total of 24 cores beast. The Intel HX processor also upsized the Smart Cache with up to 36MB.

All the 13th gen processor has also been upgraded with the higher clock of P-core and E-core with up to 600MHz and 400 MHz respectively.

One of the most crucial highlights is the flagship Intel® Core™ i9-13980HX Processor. It’s benefited from the Intel TVB (Thermal Velocity Boost) and ABT (Adaptive Boost Technology) technology, and is able to boost up to 5.6GHz with dual P-cores and 5.2GHz across all P-cores.

The performance leap of i9-13980HX will be up to 45% more than the previous generation i9-12900HX processor. The Intel H series also benefit from the specification upgrade and have up to 20% performance growth when paired with various cooling designs of MSI Cooler Boost across the models.

Maximizing CPU+GPU combined performance - MSI OverBoost Technology

On regular laptops, when both CPU and GPU are being stressed, since the thermal solution has limited heat capacity, CPU wattage will be lowered around 25W to give more room for GPU power boost (NVIDIA Dynamic Boost 2.0). That usually happens during gaming or high CPU and CPU resource demanding workload.

MSI OverBoost Technology was first created in 2022 against the situation mentioned above, maintaining CPU at higher wattage while the GPU is at its maximum power for better performance in combined loads. With the RTX 40 series platform, MSI Titan GT77 HX, Raider GE HX series, and Vector GP HX series, the CPU and GPU can be maintained at a high TDP and TGP under stress test with up to 250W - the combination of CPU at 75W and GPU at 175W, without power throttling.

For example, while playing AAA games, the workload is distributed on both CPU and GPU, and that is when MSI OverBoost Technology kicks in and keeps the performance.

In short, if the laptop is capable of holding the wattage of the CPU at a high state while allowing the GPU to be operated at its maximum wattage state, it is powered by MSI OverBoost Technology.

One more thing - MSI OverBoost Ultra technology

With new breakthroughs in 2023, MSI is taking things a step further by promising not only maximized performance in combined loads, but also in extreme CPU loads as well. If these “OverBoost” laptops is also capable of maintaining all of its P-core above 5GHz without throttling while only CPU is fully loaded, it is now an MSI OverBoost Ultra Technology laptop.

For Titan GT77 HX and Raider GE78 HX with intel i9-13980HX processor, when the workload is consisting of multiple programs that utilize CPU resources, for instance, recording, streaming, and playing games like LOL at the same time, all 8 P-cores are active and can maintain at 5.2GHz, unlike standard CPU which decreases frequency when more cores are being used. The laptops can handle the workload that is either CPU dependent or need both CPU and GPU, that is why it is called MSI OverBoost Ultra Technology.
