Hi, today we gonna talk about how AMD names their mobile CPU. From this year AMD will apply the new naming scheme for their mobile CPU and it will be extremely helpful when considering an AMD laptop if you fully understand how AMD name their mobile CPU. Like on paper it’s really not that easy to tell the performance difference between 7640U & 7630U. So let’s dive in.
The First Digit: The Year It Unveiled
The figure above clearly shows how AMD name their mobile CPU. The first digit of the model name is no longer representing the generation but the year. If it’s seven, it means it’s the model unveiled in 2023; If it’s eight, then it represents the CPU unveiled in 2024 and so on. Take the processor shown in the figure as an example, it’s 7640, which means it’s the model unveiled in 2023 cuz it starts with seven.
The Second Digit: The Segment
The second digit of the model name shares the same meaning as before. It’s the segment of the processor. If it’s nine, then it’s a processor that gonna be labeled as Ryzen 9; Take the processor shown in the figure as an example, it’s five so it’s a Ryzen 5 processor.
The Third Digit: The Architecture
Actually it’s the digit that truly represents the performance level of the processor: It represents the architecture used for the processor. If it’s 4, then it means the processor utilizes the Zen 4 architecture which is the most advanced one that AMD have right now; If it’s three, then it’s the processor featuring Zen 3 or Zen 3+ architecture, like 5000 or 6000 series. The example shown above is 7640U and it’s right the CPU has the latest Zen 4 architecture.
The Forth Digit: Just For Differentiation
The last digit of the model name is used for the differentiation between CPUs with the same segment. The higher the digit, the more performance along with the higher price could be expected. For example, if there were two CPUs 7940HX & 7945HX, 7945HX should have higher performance along with higher price due to its bigger last digit of the model name.
The Last: Series
The last letter in the model name is the same as before, representing the product series. If it’s U, it means that this processor is built for thin-and-light laptops; The HS series is for higher performance model with slimmer chassis and HX is right for those most powerful laptops in the field.
