When an MSI laptop fails to boot into the Windows desktop normally after startup and instead repeatedly restarts or automatically enters the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) without successfully loading Windows, the issue is commonly related to a recent Windows update, hardware changes, or corrupted system files.



If your device exhibits any of the following symptoms, follow the troubleshooting steps in this article:



1. After powering on, the screen displays “Getting Windows ready. Don’t turn off your computer.” The system then automatically restarts and repeatedly goes through the same process.



2. After powering on, the system directly enters the blue Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) screen and still cannot boot into the Windows desktop after restarting.

Step 1: Enter the WinRE Recovery Environment



If your device has already entered the WinRE screen automatically, proceed directly to “Step 2: WinRE Troubleshooting”.



1. Restore the hardware to the original factory configuration and perform an EC reset:



If you upgraded any hardware before the issue occurred, reinstall the original factory hardware and check whether the issue is resolved.



If you have not upgraded any hardware, disconnect all external devices, including but not limited to the mouse, keyboard, external display, USB devices, and other peripherals. Then refer to [Troubleshooting] Unable to Power On or Black Screens after Pressing the Power Button to perform an EC Reset, and then restart the laptop.



2. Restart the device. When the MSI logo appears, press the F3 key to enter WinRE, then select “Troubleshoot” > “Advanced options” and run “Startup Repair”.





Step 2: WinRE Troubleshooting



1. Uninstall the latest Windows Update



If you recently performed a Windows Update before the issue occurred, refer to [How To] Upgrade to or Downgrade from the recent Windows 11 Build, then select “Troubleshoot” > “Advanced options” > “Uninstall Updates” to remove the update.



2. Check and repair corrupted system files and bad sectors on the C: drive



a. Select “Troubleshoot” > “Advanced options” > “Command Prompt”.



b. Enter the following command:



“chkdsk /r c:”



c. After the repair is complete, enter the following command:



“sfc /scannow”



d. After the scan is complete, enter “Exit”, then select “Continue” to boot into Windows.





3. System Restore



If you have previously created a restore point, follow the steps below to restore the system:



a. Select “Troubleshoot” > “Advanced options” > “System Restore”.



b. Select the Windows account you want to sign in with and enter the account password.



c. Select the restore point you want to use and follow the on-screen instructions to start the restoration process.



4. Reset this PC



a. Select “Troubleshoot” > “Reset this PC”.



b. Select “Keep my files” to remove installed applications and settings while keeping your personal files.



c. Select either “Cloud download” or “Local reinstall”, then follow the on-screen instructions to reset the device.





5. Restore MSI Factory Settings



If the issue persists after completing the troubleshooting steps above, select “Troubleshoot” > “Restore MSI Factory Settings” and follow the on-screen instructions to restore the system to its factory state.



If the issue persists after completing all of the above steps, contact your local MSI Service Center for further professional inspection and assistance.

Q: Is there any difference in the troubleshooting procedure if my device enters WinRE directly after startup or only enters WinRE after repeatedly restarting?



A: If the device repeatedly restarts without entering WinRE, start with Step 1. If the device has already entered the WinRE screen automatically, proceed directly to Step 2.



Q: Will my personal data be lost after using “Restore MSI Factory Settings”?



A: Yes. “Restore MSI Factory Settings” restores the device to its factory state. Personal files, installed applications, and system settings will be removed.
