Answer

MSI laptops are designed with different graphics architectures to meet the performance and battery life requirements of various product series and models. Please refer to the following overview and the correct driver installation steps.

This FAQ applies to all MSI notebooks.

Overview of GPU Modes (MUX Switch Modes)

Depending on the product series and generation, MSI laptops mainly support the following GPU operating modes:

  1. Integrated Graphics Mode

In this mode, the discrete GPU is completely disabled, and all graphics processing is handled by the processor's integrated graphics. This mode provides the lowest power consumption and the longest battery life.

  2. MSHybrid Graphics Mode

In MSHybrid Graphics Mode, the system automatically switches between the integrated GPU (for power efficiency) and the NVIDIA discrete GPU (for higher performance) based on the workload of the applications being used. This mode offers the best balance between battery life and performance for everyday productivity and gaming.

  3. Discrete Graphics Mode

In this mode, all graphics processing is handled exclusively by the NVIDIA discrete GPU. It delivers the highest and most consistent graphics performance, making it the recommended choice for demanding workloads such as AAA gaming, 3D rendering, and other GPU-intensive applications.

Clean Installation Steps for Graphics Drivers

  1. Install the integrated graphics driver first

Please perform a clean installation and update of the Intel or AMD graphics driver. Make sure to restart the system after installation.

  2. Then install the discrete graphics driver

After rebooting to the desktop, proceed with a clean installation and update of the NVIDIA graphics driver.

Reference guides for clean installation:

Note: If the system is set to Integrated Graphics mode, the NVIDIA GPU will not be detected. Installing the NVIDIA driver in this mode will fail. Please switch to MSHybrid mode before starting the installation process.
