Modern Standby, same as its name, has been widely deployed in Modern laptops.
Opposite to “Modern” Standby is the “legacy” S3 Standby mode.
They are both “sleep” mode in windows, the difference is how they work.
Compared to the S3 mode, Modern Standby sleep mode wakes up much faster.
MSI has made a demonstration video about how you can utilize Modern Standby to shorten the login and wake-up process. You can think of Modern Standby as turning off your smartphone screen.
1. Wake up and login using fingerprint sensor
If you want to factory reset the laptop, you need to access the Windows troubleshoot screen. To access that, press the F3 once you boot up the laptop, then click troubleshoot.
2. Instant wake and activate face login
For laptop with IR camera and Modern Standby, it is able to wake up the laptop instantly when you open the lid, the IR camera and its LED will also be activated and start scanning for you face. It feels like you can wake up and login at the same time as it works almost simultaneously.
3. Continue playing music after the screen is off
Laptop with Modern Standby can play music with Groove (Or its successor- Media Player) even when it enters sleep mode.
In the past, if you turn off the screen to play music, the other components on your laptop will be still running and consuming battery. By using Modern Standby, unnecessary components will be turned off, only sound related components like speaker / audio IC will be given power, in order to minimize power consumption and gives user music playback function.
If you are not sure if your system is running Modern Standby, check this article and follow the step to input the command into CMD.
